Unit of competency

Modification History

Release 1. Unit code changed. Application changed. Elements and Performance Criteria changed. Range of Conditions removed. Assessment Requirements changed. Supersedes and is equivalent to PMBPROD265 Operate portable vulcanising equipment.

Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to operate portable vulcanising equipment to join conveyor belts.

This unit applies to an individual working alone or as part of a team.

The unit principally refers to portable vulcanising equipment that can range in size to suit belts from 600 mm to 3200 mm width, and belts that can be solid synthetic rubber, fabric or steel cord–reinforced; however, the underlying vulcanising principle is common to all types.

No licensing or certification requirements apply to this unit of competency at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Elements and Performance Criteria

Elements

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance Criteria

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Check work requirements

1.1 Identify requirements from job specifications

1.2 Obtain specifications relevant to the material being vulcanised

1.3 Identify time, pressure and temperature requirements from job specifications

1.4 Plan task sequences to meet job requirements

1.5 Identify waste management strategies and maintenance requirements according to workplace procedures

2. Conduct pre-production tasks

2.1 Identify and perform housekeeping tasks in preparation for work to be undertaken

2.2 Check materials and equipment for quality, access and condition in readiness for work to be undertaken

2.3 Check vulcaniser and attachments are fit for purpose against equipment specifications

2.4 Perform pre-operational checks including checking for and acting on hazards

2.5 Identify and check safety restraints, emergency stops, gauges, guards and controls against equipment specifications

2.6 Record job specifications on quality documentation

2.7 Set up vulcanising press according to equipment specifications

2.8 Set equipment control parameters according to equipment specifications and job requirements

2.9 Obtain clearances for vulcanising to commence from relevant personnel

3. Operate vulcanising processes

3.1 Start and operate unit to commence vulcanizing according to equipment instructions

3.2 Log readings according to work requirements

3.3 Check process is operating according to equipment specifications and work requirements

3.4 Pause or stop equipment in normal and abnormal circumstances according to workplace procedures

3.5 Shut down unit when cycle is completed according to equipment shutdown procedures

3.6 Disassemble equipment following equipment instructions

3.7 Conduct checks to ensure output meets job specifications

3.8 Complete vulcanizing process report

3.9 Report vulcanizing process outcomes to relevant personnel and take remedial action as required

3.10 Clean, lubricate and adjust equipment according to equipment specifications

4. Respond to vulcaniser process control variances

4.1 Identify faults and their causes.

4.2 Formulate recommendations for remediation based on identified faults and causes

Foundation Skills

This section describes those language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills that are essential to performance.

  • Numeracy skills to interpret technical information and equipment readings.
  • Reading skills to interpret specifications and workplace procedures.
  • Writing and oral communication skills to record and report on portable vulcanising equipment operations.

Other foundation skills essential to performance are explicit in the performance criteria of this unit of competency.

Assessment requirements

Modification History

Release 1. Unit code changed. Application changed. Elements and Performance Criteria changed. Range of Conditions removed. Assessment Requirements changed. Supersedes and is equivalent to PMBPROD265 Operate portable vulcanising equipment.

Performance Evidence

There must be evidence the candidate has completed the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit, and demonstrated the ability to:

  • operate portable vulcanising equipment at least once to meet job specifications.

Knowledge Evidence

There must be evidence the candidate has knowledge of:

  • the function of vulcanising equipment and machine components
  • principles of operation of the equipment
  • the criteria for overall process or equipment readiness for the process or equipment being used
  • vulcanising workflow sequences
  • changes to materials during the vulcanising process
  • role of heat and pressure in relation to providing strength, stiffness, resistance to deformation, fatigue and abrasion
  • key variables that may affect product quality and production output
  • typical process and product problems, including early warning signs, possible causes and corrective actions:
  • incorrect set-up of vulcaniser
  • unsuccessful vulcanisation processes
  • organisational procedures relevant to the work environment and job role, including procedures for the emergency shutdown of equipment
  • hazards that may arise in the job or work environment, and:
  • their possible causes
  • potential consequences
  • appropriate risk controls.

Assessment Conditions

Skills must have been demonstrated in the workplace or in a simulated environment that reflects workplace conditions and contingencies.

Assessors must satisfy the NVR/AQTF mandatory competency requirements for assessors.
